Gambia bounce back with an emphatic victory over Guinea Bissau
Gambia National Female Football TeamThe Gambia's Female Scorpions bounced back from their humiliating opening day defeat to Mali with an emphatic 5-2 victory over Guinea Bissau.
The Queen Scorpions made a fantastic come back from the brink, after the 6-0 defeat against Mali in their opening game of the on-going WAFU ZONE A Women's Tournament on Tuesday, which set alarm bellsoff with some believing their participation in the 8 team competition may be as good as over.
That notion was amplified again this evening just minutes into the game at the Wassum Sports stadium in Makeni, after they conceded their 7th goal in 2 games just 4 minutes into the game against the Bissau girls, who first opened the scoring in what would be a 7 goal thriller in the end, through Tchaloda Mane in the 4th minute.
But just as the saying goes "one's downfall is not your ending". The Scorpions refused to be cowed by their opponents and through the brilliant Adama Tamba, who put on a sterling performance at the Makeni stadium, they found their rapidly fading mojo back. Ms Tamba's inspiration was what they need, she equalised 3 minutes after the Bissau opener to restore parity and salvaged some of their dashing hopes.
But again just as they started this encounter, and as if they were still reeling from the thumping on Tuesday, they conceded a second from Guinea just a minute before the end of the normal time of the first half, through Veva Te in the 44th minute.
But once again the tallismanic woman-of-the-match Ms Tamba came to their rescue yet again, levelling the score with her second of the evening in the 48th minute. She then completed her hat trick in the 66th minute after putting the Gambian girls ahead for the first time in this thrilling encounter. And with the bit between her teeth she scored another to make it 4 -2 in the 74th minute before Ola Buwaro completed the rout with what would be the Gambia's 5th of the evening.
They had a difficult start to the tournament following that defeat to Mali and things did not get any better with the start this afternoon either, but the girls showed bags of character and fortitude to come back from behind twice and finish the game with such an emphatic scoreline, and they will now hopefully be bouyed by this result and ensure they beat Cape Verde, who lost 3-0 to Mali earlier today, in their final group to be sure of a place in the srmi-finals
