Viborg snaps up Lamin Jawara
Danish top league side Viborg FF have secured the services of Gambia U20 defender Lamin Jawara on a long-term contract.
The Superliga club, currently positioned at eight on the league standings, see the former Hawks FC defender as a prospect who they won’t rush into action.
Jawara was on trial at the Danish club last summer, playing in a reserve league match against Randers FC before going on to feature in four test matches, thereby impressing the Viborg hierarchy to table a four-year contract which will expire in June 2026.
Viborg sports director Jesper Fredberg said he was delighted to secure the services of the defense prospect and are excited about what he has to offer saying: “We are really happy that we have finally managed to get Lamin Jawara up here on a long contract. He is a young defender that we see a very exciting potential in. He is a left-footed defender who wants to play with his feet, and he has good speed and a great physical potential, and then we saw last summer that he settled well into the environment here.”
There have been talks about what role the Bakau-born defender will play considering the Superliga resumes this weekend, but Fredberg said all that is dependent on the Gambian saying: “I think it’s up to him, but I do not expect him to be around the first team for the match against Randers (on Monday). He is not a player we have brought in with an expectation that he should be able to compete for a starting place now, so we have patience, but he is a player we expect a lot from in the future!”
The 20-year-old was elated putting pen to paper saying: “I have been waiting a long time for this day, so I am very happy to finally be here again. I know that Viborg is a really good club to be in, and there are talented people here who will give me good conditions to develop as a football player.”
Jawara, who was instrumental for the Gambia U20 squad that won bronze at the 2021 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in Mauritania added: “It is a strong squad with many good players, and I want to work hard every single day and help the team with everything I can.”
The 192cm tall defender joins another 192cm tall Gambian at Viborg FF in striker Alassana Jatta.
Jawara will don the number 25 jersey in Viborg.
