Gambia-born defender Maudo “ Chuka” Jarjué has secured a move away from FK Austria Wien by joining Swedish club IF Elfsborg on a season-long loan deal.

The 23-year-old Bakoteh-born was declared surplus to requirements at the Austrian club who sent him to the reserves since October but the former Gil Vicente and Sabail FK has now found a lifeline with a move to the Allsvenskan side who have an option of making the loan permanent at the end of the season

“It feels great and I’m happy to be there. I have seen some matches of Elfsborg and I have talked to many about the club. You see that the team has high ambitions, everyone in the team wants to play and work hard and fight. It's a good team and that's why I'm here,” the 189cm player said immediately after completing his medicals and putting pen to paper.

An elated Jarjué added: “I am a central defender and I believe in myself and have high ambitions and big goals. I always give 100 percent of myself in training and in matches. I’m strong physically and fast!”

The coach of the Borås-based outfit, Jimmy Thelin, meanwhile said on his new signing that: “Maudo is a profile who has qualities to fit into our game model. He is competitive, strong in duels, fast and skilled at covering large areas.”

“He will add quality to the team directly and we also see a great development potential in him. Careful scouting and good work by our club has made this transition possible.”

Maudo, eligible for the Scorpions, will feature in the second qualifying round of the 2021/22 UEFA Europa Conference League with IF Elfsborg after they finished second in last season’s Allsvenskan.

Modou Lamin Jarju, his real name; though spelt Maudo Lamine Jarjué in Portuguese, was born in the largest urban Gambian centre of Serrekunda but is currently with Bissau-Guinean citizenship.

He becomes the second Gambian to join Elfsborg after striker Amadou Jawo who featured for them from 2009 to 2013.
