Scorpions-eligible Joseph Ceesay has secured a two-year move to Polish Ekstraklasa club Lechia Gdańsk, Gambia Sports can reveal.
Ceesay, born in Stockholm to a Gambian father, joins the two-time Polish Cup champions on a free transfer from Swedish side Helsingborgs IF.
The 22-year-old winger, who penned a deal that will make him stay at the Gdańsk-based club until the end of June 2023, was elated putting pen to paper saying he can’t wait to link up with his new teammates.
“I am very glad that I signed the contract with Lechia. I am sure that moving to Gdańsk is the right step for me and my career. I can’t wait to join the team and be able to prepare for the first match for Lechia,” he said.
The former Djurgårdens IF, IK Frej Täby and Dalkurd FF winger spent his entire life in Sweden and has been handed call-ups to the Scandinavian country’s youth teams (U18, U19 and U21) but despite that fact, he still hopes for a chance with the Scorpions.
“At the moment, it is difficult for me to say (which senior national team I will play for), I am not closing any doors to declare that I will play for Gambia or for Sweden. When I get a chance to play for one of the national teams, we will see what decision I make,” he diplomatically told Gambia Sports.
He added: “I was born in Sweden and spent practically all my life in this country, also playing for the Swedish national youth teams. In my football life, I am more of a Swedish because I have never played for the Gambia. My dad comes from Gambia and I also love this country as I have family in both countries, so in life I am half Swedish and half Gambian.”
Ceesay is the second Gambian currently playing for a Polish club after Alassana Manneh, whose Górnik Zabrze they will face next in the league on Saturday.
